Caregiving is a stressful job. If you're a caregiver, it's important that you continually evaluate your physical and emotional health. After all, you can't successfully care for someone else if your health is not at its peak.

Not able to take a break?
Unable to pursue any of my personal interests or hobbies?
If you have answered yes to any of these questions, you need to revise your caregiving plan. Seek out help from your family and friends. Think "outside the box" for ways that will enable you to take a break from your caregiving responsibilities for as little as two hours and up to eight hours each week.
Contact your local Senior Center or Office on Aging, they will have a list of services in the area that can fill this gap for you. Does your church have a Parish Nurse? This person is an invaluable resource of information regarding community services. Consider using an adult day program or non-medical home care services. Contact your local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association for some fresh ideas.
Once you have found alternative caregiving services, establish a monthly calendar. Set aside some worry free time just for you. Then take a nap, get your hair done, play a round of golf, visit friends, attend a church function. Recharge your batteries and bring balance back to your life and to your relationship with your loved one.
